Advent Devotions Needed

“Prepare ye the way of the Lord”
Matthew 3:3, Mark 1:3; Luke 3:4, John
1:23, Isaiah 40:3

This verse appears in all four Gospels, as spoken by John the Baptist. He was quoting the prophet Isaiah to describe himself to the priests and Levites who had come out to the Jordan River to discover who this Baptizer was and what he was up to. “What do you say about yourself?” they asked. (John 1:22) John the Baptist’s full reply: “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord.’” (John 1:23, NASB)
 Advent-Devotional-Sidebar
Would you like to participate in helping prepare fellow-church members for God’s coming at Christmas? Advent is our preparation time for Jesus’ birth into history and into our lives. One way to prepare for His coming is to pray daily through the use of a devotional guide.

Will you write a devotion that will be published in this year’s “A Daily Devotional Guide for Advent and Christmas”? The guidelines are simple – choose a short Scripture passage that speaks to you on any theme related to Advent or Christmas, write a personal reflection (not a sermon!) on that theme, then end with a short prayer. The entire piece should be no longer than 350 words. It can be much shorter!

If you would like to participate, please email Chris Garcia at christian.garciapubco@gmail.com. The guidelines are here. The deadline to receive the devotions is November 12. The guide will be available on December 3, 2017, the Sunday before Advent begins on December 3. We hope to have enough writers to take the daily devotions through Epiphany on January 7.

If you have any questions, please call Chris at 341-5705. THANK YOU!

Hurricane Response – How Can We Help?

This hurricane season has seen more destruction and flooding than usual.
Are you ready to help our brothers and sisters in Texas, Florida, and the Caribbean as they recover from these storms?

The teams of workers that are bringing aid to the hurricane damaged areas are in need of supplies and money. We may not be able to physically go to these locations, but we can help from here. Our goal is to assemble at least 100 flood buckets to send with UMCOR workers.

Take a card (or many cards) from the displays in the CLMC and the Narthex, purchase the items listed, and then bring them to the Commons area at the church by Saturday, October 28th.

Please be sure to purchase the correct size of the item (or a slightly smaller size).  While we appreciate heartfelt donations, only items on the supply lists and in the sizes indicated will be accepted.

Then on Sunday, October 29th following church, we will have an assembly party to put all the flood buckets together. It will be a fun, and much-needed, mission project for the whole family.

You may bring the items to the Commons area at St. James or to Ross Orthodontics on Arlington Dr. All collected items will be assembled into Relief Kits and delivered to UMCOR for use in the afflicted areas.

If you want to give directly to the relief efforts, the best way to donate financially is through UMCOR’s US Disaster Response Advance #901670. You may give online to the fund by clicking the button below, or you may donate offline with a check. If you donate with a check, you can make it out to St. James UMC, but please designate UMCOR Advance #901670 in the memo line.

As we watch news coverage of the devastating flooding that Hurricane Harvey continue to produce, we want to help.  UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) outlines specific ways that you can help now, even as rescue efforts remain underway.  Click the UMCOR logo below for information.

Operation Christmas Child

Did you know it is less than 3 months until Christmas?!?
Yes, it is that time again when we have the opportunity to share the love of God and bring joy into the lives of children around the world!

Operation Christmas Child is ready to launch.  On October 22nd, the Commons and the Narthex will be filled with empty shoe boxes waiting to be filled with gifts and love. Each box contains a brochure with a cut-out indicating whether the gifts are for a boy or girl, the age range of the child and general instructions for filling the box.

Place the filled shoe boxes on the Fellowship Hall stage by Sunday, November 19th.

What can make the shoebox so powerful? The prayer that accompanies each box. Pray as you shop, pray as you make selections, pray as you pack – pray for the child, and believe that God will direct each shoebox to a particular child.
“Lord, you know what a child’s need is and which child will receive this box. Direct me in making choices that will bless this little one in ways I cannot imagine, because most of all this gift is a means to demonstrate your love.”

Keep God’s Children Warm

homelessKeep God’s Children Warm.

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, …”  (Matthew 25:25-26)

Jesus calls us to serve Him by helping our neighbors who are going through tough times.  When we gather our resources, we can make an amazing impact on the lives of those in need.

Beginning on Thursday, Oct. 26th from 9:30-12:00 noon,
St. James will again be offering free used clothing for men, women and children. Donated items may be left in the bin labeled as such in the hallway outside the treasurer’s office. The program is in conjunction with the Food Pantry distribution every Thursday. We will continue the clothing program through the month of March. Read more…
