Shred Event

The St. James ESAG (Environmental Stewardship Action Group) will be hosting a free shredding event on Saturday, March 10th, from 12pm-2pm or until they reach capacity.  It will be held in the St. James parking lot.  This is an opportunity to safely and securely discard all of your paper waste from old records.

There will be a five box or bag maximum per person and we ask that this event be limited to residential customers (no businesses please).  Staples, paper clips and thin folders can be shredded along with paper documents, but no three-ring binders please.

Be a good steward and recycle your old records at our free shredding event.

Darevotional

For Lent this year, we’re going to try a little something different. Instead of offering our traditional devotional guide, we have produced what we call a “dare”-votional. Each day, we will read a brief scriptural quotation that will come with a simple challenge. Our hope is that over the course of these 40 days (not counting Sundays), our church community will rise to the challenge of living more deeply into our faith through our actions.

You can pick up your “Dare”-votional at the church, or sign up for the daily email version by clicking on the button.

If you are the social media type, we’d encourage you to share your Lenten Journey via #Darevotional and #StJamesUMCgvegas – hashtags are designed to help each other connect with what we have shared on social media. When clicked, you can see every post and picture posted with that hashtag, making it easier to see and encourage each other’s goals. Remember to put the pound sign (#), with no spaces, and most of all, have fun…we dare you!

Devotional Guide needs Your Story

As previously announced, St. James will publish an Easter-Pentecost Devotional Guide. It will be available on Palm Sunday, March 25. Readings will begin on Holy Thursday, March 29, and run through Pentecost Sunday, May 20. The Guide will include Easter Sunday (April 1), the seven Sundays of Easter, and Ascension Thursday, May 10. It will be quite an undertaking —
53 days of devotions!

Please consider participating in this ministry by writing a devotion. Guidelines are now available by clicking here or at the church and from Chris Garcia (christian.garciapubco@gmail.com).

If you need the encouragement and guidance to write a devotion and inspire your fellow members of St. James, Chris will hold a few writers’ workshops on Wednesday nights during Lent: February 21, February 28, and March 7.

The deadline for writers to get their devotions to Chris Garcia will be Sunday, March 11. THANK YOU!

Labyrinth

A Labyrinth Is Coming!

What is a labyrinth, you ask? A labyrinth is an intricately woven pattern that is walked by many as a way to experience peace and clarity. Walking the labyrinth is an ancient, sacred custom that symbolizes wholeness. It has been used as a tool for prayer and meditation for thousands of years. It is different from a maze in that a maze is a puzzle that needs solving. A labyrinth has only one path where the way in is the same as the way out. The path leads one to the center and back out again.
station-1-5
During Holy Week, St. James will be hosting a labyrinth with stations to meditate on the last days of Jesus Christ. It will be housed in the Fellowship Hall and available to walk from Monday, March 26 – Friday, March 30, 2018, The open hours will be 9:00 am – 8:00 pm Monday – Thursday, and 9:00 am – 3:00 pm on Friday.
Come during these times and walk the labyrinth as you meditate your journey with Jesus Christ.  Feel free to contact Mike Arny, at 252-367-9967, or any member of our St James Prayer Ministry Committee if you have any questions.

UMW Days for Girls

The St. James United Methodist Women will be holding workshops on Saturdays, February 10th and 24th from 9am to noon in Room 21 to sew and prepare kits for our Days for Girls Project. Sewers and non-sewers needed. We have several projects planned. If you have a sewing machine feel free to bring it to the workshop. We have requests from several of our Mission Teams for bags to take into the mission field this year, so we would like to get started on completing as many bags as possible this year.
