Cory Whaley

Whaley-C-picCory Whaley comes to St James as a freshman, but he is already a proven and accomplished musician. He sings tenor, plays piano and trombone, and joins our Chancel Choir and hand bells. Cory is the youngest of two, and his parents have shown unconditional support for his sister and him. He has always been interested in music, but became a serious music student when he started middle school band. Cory’s personal favorites are “Elijah Rock” by Moses Hogan and anything by Queen. While in Richlands, NC, Cory sang in the middle and high school choirs, middle and high school bands, All-County band and chorus, All-State Chorus, NCMEA Honors Choir, and musicals. Cory’s high school band director, Greg Shrekengost, was very influential in Cory’s decision to major in music. “After being under his direction, I saw how much he went out of his way to see that his students got what they needed; he found a way to help those who wanted to be successful. Even when things did not go his way, he still made the best out of every situation.”

Because of his passion to study music, Cory chose ECU for the superb reputation of the School of Music. He will graduate by the spring of 2020 with a Double Major in Music Education and Sacred Performance. Cory’s greatest hope is that music will be always appreciated as an art and not just as an extracurricular activity. His goal and ideal job is to direct his own high school’s chorus while continuing as a church musician. Cory was especially honored to launch this dream when Dr. Ward offered a position in our choral scholar program. In addition to singing with us, Cory is becoming a member of the ECU Chamber Singers. His immediate goals are to pass all his classes and to become a better musician. (Very sound goals that every parent can commend!)

Cory’s message for us: Thank you all so much for being so inviting. I have met some of the nicest people ever and I am looking forward to making music with the choir and meeting more of the members and becoming a part of the church family. We are delighted to have you join our congregation, choir, and church family! Welcome!
