Snow Day!

“God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways;
he does great things beyond our understanding.
He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’
and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’
So that everyone he has made may know his work,
he stops all people from their labor.”

                                                                 ~ Job 37:5-7

We pray that you are safe and warm in this wintry weather.

Many of the activities at church may be postponed in the next few days.

Please check the website (stjconnect.org) or the facebook page for last minute updates on any St. James activities.

The UN-Decorating of the Green

After we’ve sung the last “Silent Night” and all the relatives have gone home, there’s only one thing left to do … pack up all of the decorations and store them away for next year!

The Altar Guild invites you to come for a fun un-decorate day, this Sunday, January 7th, starting at 2 pm.  The more the merrier!

Evening Prayer Service this Sunday

If you enjoy spending quiet time with God, you will appreciate our evening prayers service, which takes place the first Sunday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the chapel. The service includes music, prayer, and a time of guided meditation with a scripture passage. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal. Our next service is Sunday, January 7th. For more information, contact Joyce Day at joyce@stjconnect.org or 752-6154.

Serving Opportunities with Growing In Grace Ministries

We have opportunities for several new leaders for our Growing and Grace team, led by Susan Barrett. Each week during the school year, Growing in Grace prepares over 70 supplemental food bags for hungry children at Wahl Coates. These are the open positions:

1) Volunteer Coordinator: schedule volunteers for staging, bagging, and delivery.

2) Coordinator for Pantry Items: keep track of needed food items, place food orders, and coordinate volunteers for Sam’s and Aldi’s pickups.

3) Food Bank Coordinator: organize Food Bank certification for church volunteers and schedule Food Bank runs.

If you’d like to help lead our Growing and Grace team, please contact Molly Carpenter (752-6154, ext. 208 or molly@stjconnect.org) or Susan Barrett (252-916-6389).

Thank You from the Salvation Army

Approximately 225 members of St. James volunteered to ring the Salvation Army bells at 20 locations on December 22nd. The ringers were enthusiastic in sharing the Christmas spirit even during a light afternoon rain and were able to raise $12,303 that will assist the Salvation Army in providing aid to our community throughout the year.

The Salvation Army representative said, “Thanks to St. James, we were able to meet our goal this year! As always, St. James stepped up to the challenge and did a beautiful job. We have a great partnership with St. James.”

Thank you St. James for once again demonstrating your willingness to be servants for this ministry in our community.

IF:Gathering 2018

Women of St. James, you are invited to be a part of IF:Gathering 2018 on Saturday, March 17th!  Register today and Mark your calendars for this amazing women’s event.

What IF we followed God with perseverance instead of insecurity?

At IF:Gathering 2018, we will look at one of Paul’s letters to Timothy as he reminded him of the power and responsibility of sharing the gospel. We want to give God away in the very places He’s put us, so we’re going to gather for the purpose of remembering why following God and making disciples matters. We all get tired, we all wonder if what we’re doing matters, so IF:Gathering 2018 will be the reminder–it will be the celebration. The work we’re doing to share the gospel on the earth is worth it and God DOES move through the little things that nobody sees.  Join us right here at St. James for the local IF:Gathering.

This event includes a light breakfast, lunch and snacks.  Childcare will be available if requested by March 2, 2018 by calling the church at (252) 752-6154.

For more information, please contact Joyce Day (252-752-6154 or Joyce@stjconnect.org) or Nicole Franklin (252-752-6154 or Franklin@stjconnect.org.

Expanding the 11:00 am Usher Team

Psalms 84-10 says: “For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand outside. I’d rather be a door-keeper in the house of God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.”
Our Ushers represent St. James in a very visible way as door-keepers, greeting the wearying of the world into the sanctuary.  Many times an Usher is the first person a guest encounters at St. James. Would you be interested in serving our church in this important ministry?
We are looking to expand our corp of Ushers for the 11:00 am service in the Sanctuary. If you are interested, or would like more information, please contact Bill Cox at 252-531-3466.

Old Board Games Needed for Wahl-Coates School

As we look to purchase gifts and new toys for our children, consider donating your old games for use by Wahl-Coates students. The Music Teacher, Dawn Wilson, is in need of used games that she will modify for musical activities. Games needed are: Jenga (or similar), Candyland, Headbanz, Dominoes, Yahtzee, Twister, and Sorry. These games do not need to be in new condition or have all the pieces. She is also in need of timers (sand or others), spinners, and blank dice. If you have any of these items to donate, please place them in the bins near the Children’s Check-in area.

Remember to turn in your box tops for credit to Wahl Coates. Also, you can list Wahl Coates as a preferred school with your VIC Card at Harris Teeter.

Lastly, Wahl Coates is collecting plastic bottle tops. Bring yours to the church for collection near the Children’s Check-In area.

Taking Steps Toward Hope

Grief involves many emotions and can resemble the movement of the ocean, coming and going like the tide. It’s common to have waves of anger, guilt, numbness, sadness or relief. All of these are normal reactions when someone you love dies, be it from a long illness or sudden tragedy. Experiencing grief and bereavement is a journey. Everyone’s experience is different and unique. You may feel alone and need someone to share your thoughts and feelings.

Living on After Loss provides an outlet for those who are experiencing grief. Living on After Loss is a structured, small group that meets once a week for an 8 week series. Here you will find a safe place to learn, understand, and cope with a loss. The first 2 sessions will focus on basic information about the grieving process, reactions to loss, and coping strategies. The next 6 sessions will provide support that will help you identify the feelings and
physical effects of loss, provide awareness of the grieving process, help in redefining yourself, and promote awareness of your potential support systems. Seats are limited and preregistration is required.

TIME:
Tuesdays, January 9 – February 27, 2018
6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
Tuesdays, April 10 – May 29, 2018
12:00pm to 1:30pm

LOCATION:
East Carolina University Family Therapy Clinic
612 East 10th St, Greenville, NC 27834

Pathways to Hope is an ongoing, monthly support group where different topics will be discussed each month. You are welcome to come and go based on your needs with no start date or end date.

TIME:
The second Tuesday of every month
5:30pm to 7:00 pm

LOCATION:
Vidant Wellness Center
2610 Stantonsburg Road, Greenville, NC 27834

Living on After Loss and Pathways to Hope are provided as a community service by Vidant Home Health and Hospice. These programs are free for individuals in our community who have experienced the death of an important person in their lives.
For further information, call (252) 847-1236.

Volunteer with Vidant Home Health and Hospice

Vidant Home Health and Hospice is currently recruiting volunteers in the Pitt County area. We have an increasing need for compassionate individuals whom are willing to provide support to patients and their families at the end of life. As a volunteer, you will be able to give back to the community, in an emotionally rewarding way.

Opportunities include:

  • Direct Support: Offering Companionship: Friendly visits to provide some special attention, a listening ear, and a comforting presence.
  • Respite Care: Respite care is an opportunity for the caregiver to have a break and still be assured their loved one is safe.
  • Indirect Support: Providing support in our offices or at the Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice.

Training is provided. To schedule a presentation about our volunteer program or to sign up as a Vidant Home Health and Hospice Volunteer please contact Angelina Brittle at 252-847-1236 or email Angelina.brittle@vidanthealth.com.
