Get the year started out right! – Join a class on Wednesday nights!  Listings of available classes are now at the Information Booths or by clicking here.  Register by clicking the button below or through the church office (252-752-6154) and then join us for the fellowship dinner and classes at TGIW (Thank God It’s Wednesday) beginning January 17th!

 

Make your reservation for the TGIW Fellowship Dinners!  Must make reservations by 5:00 pm on the Monday before the Wednesday night.  To make a reservation click on the button below, call the church office, or mark the pew pad or ConneXion Cards in the TGIW reservation area with the appropriate information.  You can sign up for the entire semester if you pre-pay for all 10 weeks.

 

 

The meals are served from 5:15 – 6:00 pm each Wednesday by various ministry groups in the church.  It’s a great way to support our missions and ministries and get to know your fellow St. James members.  Dinners are $5/person or $15/family.  Watch the weekly bulletins and newsletters for the upcoming menus.

Confirmation 2018

Are you in 6th grade or above? It’s time to think about Confirmation!

During the Confirmation preparation journey, Confirmands learn about the meaning of Christian faith; the history and teachings and The United Methodist Church; and an explanation of the baptismal and membership vows they will be professing.

We are having an Information Meeting on Sunday, January 14th at 2:00 pm. If you have questions or concerns about the Confirmation preparation process, please contact Abby Gillette, Youth Director, at 252-752-6154 or Abby@stjconnect.org.

 

Youth Gathering

The new year will officially start for the Youth Gathering on Sunday, January 28th at 6:00 pm.  We will kick off the new year with a fun get-to-know-you kind of night.

Remember that Wednesday evening events will begin on January 17th. Join us for Elevate/Resonate at 6:00 pm on Wednesday nights!

The Youth Leadership Team will meet at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 21st. And a Volunteer Meeting will be at 6:00 pm that day.

 

Staff Announcement

As you may recall, your Staff Parish Relations Committee announced a new position for our church last fall:  the Director of Congregational Engagement.  The purpose of this position is to equip the congregation to better mind the “front door” of the church by engaging our visitors and other members in the ministries of the church.  We were blessed with many excellent and gifted applicants.  For those who may be wondering:  this position is able to be funded by some salary reductions from the prior year, meaning it is “budget neutral”. 
 
With prayerful discernment and excitement, your Staff Parish Relations Committee is pleased to announce that Desda White will be filling this position.  Desda has more than a decade of experience doing similar work with United Methodist churches in the Richmond, VA area, most recently as the Director of Discipleship & Programs at River Road UMC.  She is also a Certified Gallup Faith Based StrengthsFinder Coach, which will be invaluable as she helps our members and visitors find their best points of connection in the church.  We will be sharing more information about Desda and her family in the coming weeks.
 
Desda will begin work on Tuesday, January 16.  Her husband Forrest and their youngest daughter will remain in Richmond through the school year.  
 
Please join us in welcoming Desda and helping her in her critical ministry for our church!

JMT’s Valentine Dinner

The Jamaica Mission Team presents the Annual Valentine Dinner – An elegant evening of fine dining, live music and mission support.

Saturday, February 10, 2018
Doors open at 5:30 pm

Dinner is served at 6:30 pm
$30 per person

 

Tickets are now available from any member of the Jamaica Mission Team or from the church office. Groups of 8 can reserve a table.
Childcare is available only if reserved by Feb. 8th by calling the church office at 752-6154.

Women of St. James, you are invited to be a part of IF:Gathering 2018 on Saturday, March 17th!  Register today and Mark your calendars for this amazing women’s event.

What IF we followed God with perseverance instead of insecurity?

At IF:Gathering 2018, we will look at one of Paul’s letters to Timothy as he reminded him of the power and responsibility of sharing the gospel. We want to give God away in the very places He’s put us, so we’re going to gather for the purpose of remembering why following God and making disciples matters. We all get tired, we all wonder if what we’re doing matters, so IF:Gathering 2018 will be the reminder–it will be the celebration. The work we’re doing to share the gospel on the earth is worth it and God DOES move through the little things that nobody sees.  Join us right here at St. James for the local IF:Gathering.

Serving Opportunities with Growing In Grace Ministries

We have opportunities for several new leaders for our Growing and Grace team, led by Susan Barrett. Each week during the school year, Growing in Grace prepares over 70 supplemental food bags for hungry children at Wahl Coates. These are the open positions:

 

1) Volunteer Coordinator: schedule volunteers for staging, bagging, and delivery.

2) Coordinator for Pantry Items: keep track of needed food items, place food orders, and coordinate volunteers for Sam’s and Aldi’s pickups.

3) Food Bank Coordinator: organize Food Bank certification for church volunteers and schedule Food Bank runs.

Expanding the 11:00 am Usher Team

Psalms 84-10 says: “For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand outside. I’d rather be a door-keeper in the house of God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.”
Our Ushers represent St. James in a very visible way as door-keepers, greeting the wearying of the world into the sanctuary.  Many times an Usher is the first person a guest encounters at St. James. Would you be interested in serving our church in this important ministry?
We are looking to expand our corp of Ushers for the 11:00 am service in the Sanctuary. If you are interested, or would like more information, please contact Bill Cox at 252-531-3466.

Taking Steps Toward Hope

Grief involves many emotions and can resemble the movement of the ocean, coming and going like the tide. It’s common to have waves of anger, guilt, numbness, sadness or relief. All of these are normal reactions when someone you love dies, be it from a long illness or sudden tragedy. Experiencing grief and bereavement is a journey. Everyone’s experience is different and unique. You may feel alone and need someone to share your thoughts and feelings.

Living on After Loss provides an outlet for those who are experiencing grief. Living on After Loss is a structured, small group that meets once a week for an 8 week series. Here you will find a safe place to learn, understand, and cope with a loss. The first 2 sessions will focus on basic information about the grieving process, reactions to loss, and coping strategies. The next 6 sessions will provide support that will help you identify the feelings and
physical effects of loss, provide awareness of the grieving process, help in redefining yourself, and promote awareness of your potential support systems. Seats are limited and preregistration is required.

Pathways to Hope is an ongoing, monthly support group where different topics will be discussed each month. You are welcome to come and go based on your needs with no start date or end date.

Living on After Loss and Pathways to Hope are provided as a community service by Vidant Home Health and Hospice. These programs are free for individuals in our community who have experienced the death of an important person in their lives.

Volunteer with Vidant Home Health and Hospice

Vidant Home Health and Hospice is currently recruiting volunteers in the Pitt County area. We have an increasing need for compassionate individuals whom are willing to provide support to patients and their families at the end of life. As a volunteer, you will be able to give back to the community, in an emotionally rewarding way.

Opportunities include:

  • Direct Support: Offering Companionship: Friendly visits to provide some special attention, a listening ear, and a comforting presence.
  • Respite Care: Respite care is an opportunity for the caregiver to have a break and still be assured their loved one is safe.
  • Indirect Support: Providing support in our offices or at the Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice.
