Student Ministries Update

Our congregation’s staff-parish relations committee is moving ahead on a search for our next Director of Student Ministries, as Ryan Dunn will be leaving that position after February 19. It is likely that there will be an interim period between Ryan’s departure and a new Director’s start time. Thanks to our wonderful, dedicated volunteers, our regular programming is well-equipped to finish out the school year–though we could use one more adult or couple to be a floating presence at Sunday night’s Gatherings.

We do not, however, have leadership in place for our normal summer-time missions experiences. These experiences include Camp Connect for our middle school students (June 18-22), and a possible flood relief trip for our high school students (July 23-29). Camp Connect is a locally-based camp experience with students staying over night and working at service sites through the day. The high school trip was exploring working down in the Lumberton area on flood clean-up projects.

For both experiences, we will need some adults to commit as coordinators for the trips and other adults to be chaperone-mentors during the trips. We hope our parents will consider making these experiences available for our students by committing their prayers, presence, gifts and service in conjunction with these transformative trips.

If you’d like information on these opportunities (or if you’re already willing to jump into leadership on this), please contact Ryan Dunn at ryan@stjconnect.org.

Lent is our preparation time for Easter — the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Will you write a devotion for “A Daily Devotional Guide for Lent” to help the members of St. James prepare for Easter?  The guidelines are simple and can be found at the Information Booths at the church, or download one here.  The deadline to submit your devotion is Friday, February 10th.

The Methodist Home for Children believes that all children deserve a safe, loving home where they can thrive and live to their full God-given potential. But many thousands in North Carolina lack this important foundation for a good life.

On Methodist Home for Children Sunday, February 19th, you can make a difference!

This is the one day a year when congregations in the NC Conference of the United Methodist Church take up a special collection for the children and families served by MHC. Last year MHC helped nearly 1,400 children and families thanks in large part to the generosity United Methodist congregations. We need your help to continue changing lives and inspiring hope.

This is an important ministry that St. James UMC believes in! Please join us as we support their cause.

The St. James Prayer Ministry offers its Monthly Prayer Vigil on Monday, February 6, 2017 from 4 pm – 8 pm

in the Chapel.

Come and enjoy times of peace and lifting up within a day of busy activities.

Reception for the Dunn Family

There will be a reception for Ryan, Gina, and Braden Dunn on Sunday, February 19th, 2:00 – 4:00 pm. We will celebrate their 8 years of ministry with us at St. James UMC and wish Ryan, Gina, and Braden well as they begin their new life in Nashville, TN.

If you would like to contribute to a love offering for the Dunns, please send it to the church office before Tuesday, Feb 14th.   (Note that your donation is a gift to the Dunns, not a gift to the church.  Therefore the donation will not be tax deductible.)

A Note from Ryan

On January 1st, it was announced that Ryan, Gina, and Braden would be moving to the Nashville, TN area.  Read more about his call and the adventure that God has opened for the Dunns.

Collecting Bibles for the Homeless Shelter

The Bible Sunday School Class has been collecting Bibles for Community Crossroads, the homeless shelter. People using the shelter cannot believe that the Bibles are there for them to take as their own. We have so far taken about forty Bibles and now there are only three left for the residents there. If you have any Bibles to donate, please take them to Room 22 or give them to Aaron Sampson. We will be taking Bibles continuously as they are donated.

Eagle and Super Nova Award Ceremony

The St. James community is invited to share in the celebration of achievement for three young men.  On Sunday, February 12 at 2 pm, St. James Scout Troop will hold an Eagle ceremony for Evan House and Nick Proctor along with awarding Ian Meredith the Super Nova Award.  Join us as we congratulate these scouts for their perseverance, hard work, and successful completion in earning thee awards.

Quarterly Contribution Statements moving to Email

Our goal is to be good stewards of God’s resources. One way we can do this is by emailing your quarterly contribution statements. You can help us by making sure we have an accurate email address for you. As of April, 2017 all quarterly contribution statements will be emailed. If you prefer to receive a paper statement mailed to you in lieu of an emailed statement, please contact Marianne Leventry at 252-752- 6154 or Marianne@stjconnect.org. For tax purposes, you will always get a paper copy of your year-end statement.

Vidant Home Health and Hospice Volunteer Training

Each day our Vidant volunteers help deliver the high-quality, compassionate care our patients and their families deserve. Many volunteer because they want to give back to their community, believe in the mission of Hospice, or have personally experienced the support of hospice care with a friend or relative at the end of life. Would you be interested in becoming a volunteer?

As a volunteer, you will be able to give back to your community in a gratifying, intellectually stimulating, and emotionally meaningful way. Volunteers are able to determine how much time they give each week, typically up to 2-4 hours or more depending on your personal preference and availability.  The 16 hour training is especially designed to prepare Volunteers to perform this vital service. All training is provided free of charge by Vidant Home Health and Hospice Volunteer Coordinator.

Our next Volunteer Training is Monday, February 20, 9am-4pm, and Tuesday, February 21, 9am-3pm. It will be at Vidant Home Health and Hospice, Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice, 920 Wellness Dr., Greenville, NC 27834.  Click here to download a flyer.

For more information or to register please contact Angelina Brittle by phone at 252-847-1236, or by email at Angelina.brittle@vidanthealth.com
