“Follow Jesus … Love Others … Change the World”

If you enjoy spending quiet time with God, you will appreciate our evening prayers service, which takes place the first Sunday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the chapel. The service includes music, prayer, and a time of guided meditation with a scripture passage. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal. Our next service is this Sunday, February 4th.

For more information, contact Joyce Day at joyce@stjconnect.org or 752-6154.

Methodist Home for Children Sunday

Sunday, February 11th

The Methodist Home for Children believes that all children deserve a safe, loving home where they can thrive and live to their full God-given potential. But many thousands in North Carolina lack this important foundation for a good life.

On Methodist Home for Children Sunday, February 11th, you can make a difference!

This is the one day a year when congregations in the NC Conference of the United Methodist Church take up a special collection for the children and families served by MHC. Last year MHC helped nearly 1,400 children and families thanks in large part to the generosity United Methodist congregations. We need your help to continue changing lives and inspiring hope. There will be special offering envelopes on Sunday, February 11th. Please mark your special gifts to be included in the Methodist Home for Children offering.

Also, on Sunday, February 11th, we will welcome the President of the Methodist Home for Children, Bruce Stanley to St. James. He will be sharing the message at the 9:00 AM (CLMC) and the 11:00 AM (Sanctuary) services.

This is an important ministry that St. James UMC believes in! Please join us as we support their cause.

Lent begins with the Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday, February 14th, at 6:30 pm. It is a time that makes us aware of our brokenness and leads us to confession and reconciliation with God.

On our journey to the cross this year, we are exploring what makes Jesus such a threat for some. Join us on Ash Wednesday as we begin our journey with Jesus.

Days for Girls Workshops

The United Methodist Women will hold Days for Girls Workshops on Saturdays, February 10th and 24th in Room 21 from 9am to 12 noon.

Sewers and non-sewers needed. We have several projects planned. If you have a sewing machine feel free to bring it to the workshop. We have requests from several of our Mission Teams for bags to take into the mission field this year, so we would like to get started on completing as many bags as possible this year.

If you have questions please contact Tammy Stephenson at 327-0599 or stephensont@ecu.edu

Easter/Pentecost Devotional Guide

The Christmas decorations have just been stored, yet Ash Wednesday and Lent are almost here. That short period would have required a very quick turn-around from our Advent/Christmas/Epiphany Devotional Guide to the publication of our traditional Lent/Easter Devotional. For that reason, and to try something a little different during Lent, this year we are setting our sights on publishing an Easter-Pentecost Devotional Guide.

For those of you looking for a spiritual aid for Lent, fear not!  We have a planned a “Darevotional” guide that will offer a daily verse and short challenge (dare) for us to practice our faith.  These will be ready by the Ash Wednesday Service on February 14.

The Easter-Pentecost Devotional Guide will be available on Palm Sunday, March 25. Readings will begin on Holy Thursday, March 29, and run through Pentecost Sunday, May 20. The Guide will include Easter Sunday (April 1), the seven Sundays of Easter, and Ascension Thursday, May 10. It will be quite an undertaking — 53 days of devotions!

Please consider participating in this ministry by writing a devotion. Guidelines will be published soon, but we will hold a few writers’ workshops on Wednesday nights during Lent, if you need the encouragement and guidance to write a devotion and inspire your fellow members of St. James. The deadline for writers to get their devotions to Chris Garcia (christian.garciapubco@gmail.com) will be Sunday, March 11. Chris will hold the workshops on February 21, February 28, and March 7.

Hey y’all,

I want you to know what is up and coming with the youth program for this month!

– First off, congrats to our confirmation class, who just started classes this Sunday!

– This upcoming Sunday (Feb. 4) is the Super Bowl, if you haven’t heard. We will be having a SOUPer Bowl party, which will consist of eating soup while watching the Super Bowl, of course. What we have asked the students to bring is dessert for the party. Please write your last name on any tupperware you would like returned.

Feb. 10th (Saturday) is the Valentine’s Day Dinner fundraiser for the Jamaica Mission Team. We are continuing the tradition of offering youth help in return for a donation to youth mission fund. Youth will be helping the mission team with whatever they need, and will need to wear a white shirt and black pants. This will benefit our mission trips this year, so I ask that you send your students up to the church in the proper attire at 4:30 p.m.

Feb. 11th we will have a normal Gathering

Feb. 14th is Valentine’s Day, but also Ash Wednesday. Because of the latter, we will not have Wednesday night activities that night, but instead, will go to the service. Hope to see you all there!

Feb. 18th we will be doing mission work here at church for our Mission of the Month

Feb. 25th we will have a normal Gathering.

We have resumed Wednesday night activities so Elevate will be continuing in the scout hut, and Resonate will be continuing in the game room. The only night this month that we will not have it is the aforementioned Ash Wednesday.

Mission Trips are quickly approaching and right around the corner! What does that mean for students?

– Middle school will be participating in Camp Connect again. This is a local project that brings churches together from across Pitt County to help the community of Greenville through missions. If your student is CURRENTLY in 6th-8th grade, they will be participating in that for a mission trip. It is an overnight trip, and they stay in the dorms at ECU for the duration of that week. I will be sending more information on this as the information comes out.

– High school is going to Houston, Tx. If your student is CURRENTLY in 9th-12th grade, this is the mission trip they will go on. We will be going July 15-21. If you are interested in having your student go, or they are interested in going on this trip, please let me know ASAP, as this trip by nature will be slightly more expensive, so we need to hop on fundraising. I will be sending an email out this week with more details.

Thank y’all for your time, and as always, please contact me with any questions. Thanks!

Abby

Participation is needed in a research study about strength-training. We are looking for women over the age of 70 who are able to participate in a strength-training program. Participation can include three visits of an hour and a half each plus three, fifteen-minute visits a week for sixteen weeks. This will total approximately forty-five minutes per week, or seventeen hours for completion of the study.

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effect of a lower-limb strength-training program on muscle volume and strength in women over the age of 70. It will take place at the ECU Bio-mechanics Lab of the Department of Kinesiology.

If interested, please contact Ana Gomez at 252-737-4616 or gomezgranadosa15@students.ecu.edu (preferred) or Zachary Domire at domirez@ecu.edu.
