This Week at

“Follow Jesus … Love Others … Change the World”

Congregations For Children (C4C)

has been selected as our Mission Focus for the season of Lent.

What is C4C? Congregations for Children is a partnership between St James and Wahl Coates Elementary School which has been in place officially since April of 2017. It all started with a request for pastor discretionary funds for a walker for a child and it has exploded since then. Congregations for Children is now a church wide effort to reflect the love of Christ to our “neighbors” by assisting in meeting the needs of the students and teachers.

With God’s help, generous donations, many volunteer hours, and the efforts of several ministry areas of St James, we have blessed many at Wahl Coates and been blessed ourselves. With the help of the United Methodist Women, we were able to provide a bag of school supplies to every student on the first day of school this past fall. Every week, 70+ Food bags are delivered to students in need by the Growing in Grace Ministry. The In Stitches and Prayer Shawl Groups have provided wheelchair lap blankets, and the St. James Prayer Team prays weekly for the students, teachers, and staff at Wahl-Coates.

The C4C program is actively assisting with the purchase of a new stage curtain for the school, beautification projects on the school grounds, providing school uniforms for children in need, and many more needs at Wahl Coates. It is through your generous donations that these projects are possible and our neighborly assistance can continue. Help us continue our work with Wahl Coates by remembering us during the season of Lent.

We will be collecting gifts through Sunday, April 8th, to support the work of the Congregations For Children (C4C) ministries. THANK YOU for your prayers, your help, and your generosity.

Lent has now begun.
Our 40-day journey towards Easter.
Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection, an opportunity for us to focus on our relationship with God.

On our journey to the cross this year, we are exploring what makes Jesus such a threat for some. Join us for worship and discover some of the radical and confrontational teachings of Jesus.

Remember to pick up a copy of the Lenten “Dare”-votional for your daily challenge to walk on the path of faithful living.  Click here to sign-up for the daily “dares” to be emailed to you every morning.

Starting Fresh

It’s a New Year and a new opportunity to grow in your faith journey!  Why not join an Adult Ministries Small Group at St. James UMC?

Many of the Winter/Spring 2018 Adult Classes are already under way. But there are a couple of classes that begin on February 21st.  Click on the button below to register.

The Guatemala Mission Team will host a 2018 Mission Trip Informational Meeting on Sun, Feb 18 at 3:00 PM in the Parlor.

The dates of the mission trip will be Sat, Sep 29 through Sun, Oct 7.  In addition to the medical clinics that we staff, we host women’s and children’s ministries, install stoves in the community that we serve and undertake other construction type projects.

The cost of last year’s trip was approximately $1250. We are planning on several fundraisers this year in addition to hosting two spring and two fall TGIW dinners at St James. More details to follow at the meeting.

If you are interested in attending and do not have an access code to the building for Sunday evenings, please contact Eric Everett at 252-367-6511 when you arrive at the church and he will open the door for you. Please join us!

Easter/Pentecost Devotional Guide

As previously announced, St. James will publish an Easter-Pentecost Devotional Guide. It will be available on Palm Sunday, March 25. Readings will begin on Holy Thursday, March 29, and run through Pentecost Sunday, May 20. The Guide will include Easter Sunday (April 1), the seven Sundays of Easter, and Ascension Thursday, May 10. It will be quite an undertaking — 53 days of devotions!

Please consider participating in this ministry by writing a devotion. Guidelines are now available by clicking here or at the church. If you need the encouragement and guidance to write a devotion and inspire your fellow members of St. James, Chris will hold a few writers’ workshops on Wednesday nights during Lent: February 21, February 28, and March 7.

The deadline for writers to get their devotions to Chris Garcia (christian.garciapubco@gmail.com) will be Sunday, March 11.

THANK YOU!

College Scholarships at St. James

There are a number of foundations that offer annual scholarships to graduating High School Seniors from the St. James community. To receive one of these scholarships, a student must apply and be accepted by the scholarship committee. The applications for College Scholarships are now available in the Church Office or download one here.

The completed application, along with a current signed and sealed school transcript, must be returned to the Church Office by Friday, March 23rd, 2018 at 5:00 pm EDT. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. The Selection Committee of the Board of Trustees will meet in April to award the scholarships. The recipients will be notified in May.

High School seniors who are active members of St. James United Methodist Church are encouraged to apply. Applications will be scored on a rubric assessing church involvement, school performance and participation, community participation, and interview with the committee.

Monetary donations are welcome to help supplement scholarships this year.

Days for Girls Workshops

The United Methodist Women will hold Days for Girls Workshops on Saturdays, February 10th and 24th in Room 21 from 9am to 12 noon.

Sewers and non-sewers needed. We have several projects planned. If you have a sewing machine feel free to bring it to the workshop. We have requests from several of our Mission Teams for bags to take into the mission field this year, so we would like to get started on completing as many bags as possible this year.

If you have questions please contact Tammy Stephenson at 327-0599 or stephensont@ecu.edu

Hey y’all,

I want you to know what is up and coming with the youth program for this month!

Feb. 18th we will be doing mission work here at church for our Mission of the Month

Feb. 25th we will have a normal Gathering.

We have resumed Wednesday night activities so Elevate will be continuing in the scout hut, and Resonate will be continuing in the game room. The only night this month that we will not have it is the aforementioned Ash Wednesday.

Mission Trips are quickly approaching and right around the corner! What does that mean for students?

– Middle school will be participating in Camp Connect again. This is a local project that brings churches together from across Pitt County to help the community of Greenville through missions. If your student is CURRENTLY in 6th-8th grade, they will be participating in that for a mission trip. It is an overnight trip, and they stay in the dorms at ECU for the duration of that week. I will be sending more information on this as the information comes out.

– High school is going to Houston, Tx. If your student is CURRENTLY in 9th-12th grade, this is the mission trip they will go on. We will be going July 15-21. If you are interested in having your student go, or they are interested in going on this trip, please let me know ASAP, as this trip by nature will be slightly more expensive, so we need to hop on fundraising. I will be sending an email out this week with more details.

Thank y’all for your time, and as always, please contact me with any questions. Thanks!

Older Women needed for study at ECU Kinesiology

Participation is needed in a research study about strength-training. We are looking for women over the age of 70 who are able to participate in a strength-training program. Participation can include three visits of an hour and a half each plus three, fifteen-minute visits a week for sixteen weeks. This will total approximately forty-five minutes per week, or seventeen hours for completion of the study.

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effect of a lower-limb strength-training program on muscle volume and strength in women over the age of 70. It will take place at the ECU Bio-mechanics Lab of the Department of Kinesiology.

If interested, please contact Ana Gomez at 252-737-4616 or gomezgranadosa15@students.ecu.edu (preferred) or Zachary Domire at domirez@ecu.edu.
