“Follow Jesus … Love Others … Change the World”

We Welcome Paula Hamlin and Tommy Shaw

to the St. James Staff!

The Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) has announced two new administrative staff members joining the St. James Ministry Teams.

Paula Hamlin will be our new Administrative Assistant beginning March 1st. She will be taking on the responsibilities of the weekly bulletins, maintaining the church membership roll, and the ongoing administrative support for the missions and ministries at St. James. Her office will be in room 45 directly across the hall from the Choir room. Stop by and introduce yourself to Paula when you can!

Tommy Shaw will be our new receptionist. Tommy has been serving as the interim receptionist since the beginning of the year, so you may have already seen Tommy at his desk in the Children’s Check-In of the Commons or spoken to him on the phone. We are taking off the “interim” tag and glad to have him greeting folks at the door and answering the phones. Tommy will also be taking on some administrative responsibilities supporting the church communications.

Welcome to Paula and Tommy!

New Children’s Sunday Schedule

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14)
We are excited to announce we are “tweaking” our children’s worship experience. Children ages 3 years-5th grade will start off in worship with their families but have the option to leave for the second half of the service. Following the Children’s Moment with one of our pastors, Children’s Ministry staff will guide children to the chapel (8:45 and 9:00 services only) where they will participate in and help lead a mini-worship service especially for them! Following the Children’s Moment during the 11:00 and 11:11 services, the Children’s Ministry staff will guide the children back to the activity room in the Young Disciple’s Wing where they will enjoy fellowship together. Please check in children before worship at the computer in the Narthex or down in the Commons Lobby.

Easter/Pentecost Devotional Guide Needs YOU!

St. James will publish an Easter-Pentecost Devotional Guide. It will be available on Palm Sunday, March 25. Readings will begin on Holy Thursday, March 29, and run through Pentecost Sunday, May 20. The Guide will include Easter Sunday (April 1), the seven Sundays of Easter, and Ascension Thursday, May 10. It will be quite an undertaking — 53 days of devotions!

Please consider participating in this ministry by writing a devotion. Guidelines are now available by clicking here or at the church. If you need the encouragement and guidance to write a devotion and inspire your fellow members of St. James, Chris will hold writers’ workshops on Wednesday nights during Lent: February 28, and March 7.

The deadline for writers to get their devotions to Chris Garcia (christian.garciapubco@gmail.com) will be Sunday, March 11.

THANK YOU!

The St. James ESAG (Environmental Stewardship Action Group) will be hosting a free shredding event on Saturday, March 10th, from 12pm-2pm or until they reach capacity. It will be held in the St. James parking lot. This is an opportunity to safely and securely discard all of your paper waste from old records.

There will be a five box or bag maximum per person and we ask that this event be limited to residential customers (no businesses please). Staples, paper clips and thin folders can be shredded along with paper documents, but no three-ring binders or plastic materials please.

Be a good steward and recycle your old records at our free shredding event.

The UMW invites you to attend A Call to Prayer & Self-Denial on March 10th from 10 to 11 am in the Chapel. The 2018 theme is Developing Leaders. Liz Liles, Director of Daughters of Worth, will be our guest speaker and is very passionate about helping disadvantaged girls in our community. The Notes of Hope project is part of Liz Liles’ Daughters of Worth and hosted by St. James.

There will be a basket for supplies such as Sharpie pens (any color), stickers, or book of stamps, any of those items would be appreciated.

Please enter through the doors in the Narthex.

Congregations For Children (C4C)

has been selected as our Mission Focus for the season of Lent.

The C4C program is actively assisting with the purchase of a new stage curtain for the school, beautification projects on the school grounds, providing school uniforms for children in need, and many more needs at Wahl Coates. It is through your generous donations that these projects are possible and our neighborly assistance can continue. Help us continue our work with Wahl Coates by remembering us during the season of Lent.

We will be collecting gifts through Sunday, April 8th, to support the work of the Congregations For Children (C4C) ministries. THANK YOU for your prayers, your help, and your generosity.

College Scholarships at St. James

There are a number of foundations that offer annual scholarships to graduating High School Seniors from the St. James community. To receive one of these scholarships, a student must apply and be accepted by the scholarship committee. The applications for College Scholarships are now available in the Church Office or download one here.

The completed application, along with a current signed and sealed school transcript, must be returned to the Church Office by Friday, March 23rd, 2018 at 5:00 pm EDT. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. The Selection Committee of the Board of Trustees will meet in April to award the scholarships. The recipients will be notified in May.

High School seniors who are active members of St. James United Methodist Church are encouraged to apply. Applications will be scored on a rubric assessing church involvement, school performance and participation, community participation, and interview with the committee.

Monetary donations are welcome to help supplement scholarships this year.

Hey y’all,

I want you to know what is up and coming with the youth program for this month!

March 2-4 is the confirmation retreat. If you have a student in confirmation and they are eligible to go, I highly recommend it. For those of you without students in confirmation, there will be no youth on Sunday, March 4.

March 7th is the Youth Dinner night for our TGIW programming. We will be serving dinner, and selling bracelets in hopes of raising money for our High school mission trip to Texas this summer. Our point person for this is Brenda Woolard. Please come out to help and/or support our youth that night!

March 17 is not just St. Patrick’s Day, but is also the IF: Gathering for women and girls who are in high school. We will host it here in the CLMC. For more information on it, please either visit https://www.ifgathering.com/ or talk to Joyce Day, Nicole Franklin, or Kirstin Tart. It will be a bunch of fun, packed with a lot of Jesus and worship. I am personally pretty excited for this event. If you know a high school girl interested, please let me or any of the aforementioned ladies know.

April 1st is Easter. There will be no confirmation that day. There will also be no youth. This is the first weekend of spring break for Pitt County students.

April 4-7th we will be go on a camping trip to Cliffs of the Neuse. (In youth I mistakenly said 5-7th, and your youth may have told you those dates.) The cost will be $20, or $15 each for students coming from the same household. I will be having brochures shortly. The deadline for sign-ups and money due is Thursday, March 15th.

April 8th there will be no youth as we will be coming home from a camping trip.

May 4-5th we will be participating in the city-wide event Out of the Box. This is an event started by First Christian Church in Greenville, in which we raise funds and awareness for our local homeless shelter, and climaxes to May 4th when we will spend the night in cardboard boxes. We will be raising money for the Community Crossroads Center throughout this semester by gathering “sponsors” to donate $25 each. Each student wanting to go to the event should have 3 sponsors. At the end we pool the money to donate to the community crossroads center. I have attached the donation sheet that you can print off to help keep track of their donations.
On May 4th (Friday) after school, we as a youth group will get together here at St. James and build shelters out of cardboard boxes in the field and spend the night sleeping in them. We will have several activities to do that evening, all of which will be outside. We will have soup for dinner, have marshmallows by the fire-pit, and a few other activities. The students will be allowed to bring 3 items to help simulate the conditions homeless people face everyday.

Lastly, I will be sending out sign-ups for Camp Connect (middle school mission trip) shortly. The week of Camp Connect is June 17-21.

Thank y’all for your time, and as always, please contact me with any questions. Thanks!

Abby

Announcements

UMW Circle #3 Meetings

UMW Circle #3 is meeting on Sunday,March 4th at 6:00 pm in the Retreat House.  In April we will meet April 8th, because the 1st is Easter Sunday.

Growing In Grace Needs Plastic

   Grocery Bags

Unsure what to do with all those used plastic grocery bags?  Recycle them with us!  We use them to pack the weekend food packs for the children at Wahl Coates school.  Please bring the bags to the church and place them in Room 305 in the CLMC or in the GIG bin in the office hall.

Easter Donations

On Easter Sunday, April 1st, our bulletins will contain a listing of special donations “in honor of” or “in memory of” loved ones of this congregation. This is a wonderful way to honor the saints that have gone before us as we look forward to the time that we will see them again on that great resurrection day! If you would like to have a loved one listed in the bulletin, please fill out the dedication form (available in the church office or download one here) and return it to the church office by Sunday, March 18th.

We will not be purchasing Lilies this year to decorate the Sanctuary. Instead, these donations will be used for the Altar Guild fund to supply altar flowers throughout the year in the Sanctuary and the CLMC.

Volunteer Substitutes Needed

  for our Preschool

The Flu has been very active this year and we have had a few days where our preschool staff was down a teacher or two.  We are looking for a few valued members that would be willing to substitute at the St. James Preschool on those mornings.  You don’t need to have teaching experience, only a love for children.  The preschool operates from 8:30 – 12:30 each weekday morning.  Would you be willing to join our list of substitutes?  To volunteer, or for more information, please contact Dana Carpenetti at 252-752-6154 or Dana@stjconnect.org.
