Spring Fling is Just Around the Corner!

The trailer has arrived and is awaiting your treasures.  It is open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm every day.  Please remember to pack the items into the far back of the trailer.  If you need a receipt or need help in the trailer, please come into the church office.

Spring Fling is Saturday, April 22nd!

Get Involved now by being part of these Crafty Workshops!

Are you crafty? Do you love to make beautiful things? We need volunteers to help prepare some Bazaar items for Spring Fling! Choose one or come to all three workshops! No previous experience is necessary. All help is appreciated.

There are 2 more workshops being offered:
– Tuesday, March 21 (9:30 – noon)  Decorate grapevine wreaths with Becky Brittle.
– Tuesday, March 28 (9:00 am – 1 pm)  Paint bird houses, using your imagination, with Betty Fuqua. Bring a bag lunch if you wish.

Moe’s to join in Spring Fling Concessions

We have a new addition to the concessions at the Spring Fling auction … Moe’s! In addition to the regular Nathan hot dogs and Chick-fil-A sandwiches, we will be offering delicious Moe’s burritos.

In addition, Moe’s is offering a 20% discount on Sundays when you present a St. James church bulletin. Thank you for supporting Moe’s and Chick-fil-A in Winterville – they are supporter of St. James Spring Fling!

Update on Open Staff Positions

On behalf of the SPRC, I wanted to take a moment and update the congregation on our open positions.

Regarding the Youth Director position, we have been very fortunate to have several good candidates apply for this position. Telephone interviews have been completed and we are currently coordinating with our top 5 candidates to come in for face to face interviews. We expect to have all of the face to face interviews completed by the end of March and an offer made shortly after. We will make an announcement shortly after acceptance.

Regarding the Senior Pastor position, Rev. Linda Taylor, our district superintendent, has met with Johnny and the SPRC to understand the attributes that will be critical to the success of St. James and the new pastor. As you may know, the Senior Pastor is an appointed position made by Bishop Ward. This means that the SPRC will not interview candidates as we did with the Associate Pastor position. The Cabinet (which includes the Bishop and District Superintendents) will discuss the attributes we provided and will look at all the churches in the conference and will use prayer to allow the Holy Spirit to guide the discussion and ultimate placement of our Pastor. Once the final determination is made, the SPRC will be notified and we will announce at all of the church services the following Sunday. We expect this to be sometime in late April.

Hopefully, this update has provided some clarity and timing on our open positions. I would ask that you be in prayer for the SPRC, the Bishop and Cabinet, along with Johnny and Susan during this time of transition.

May God Bless.

Tim Barrett
SPRC Chair

Letter from our District Lay Leader

Dear Pastors, Lay Leaders and Laity of the Sound District,

The Executive Committee of the Conference Board of Laity met for discussion around Annual Conference. Because of time restraints, the Order of the Day for Laity was discussed. We received such good responses from our game last year; we felt we need to focus on laity missions involving the audience again this year.

Lay Leaders need to collect mission stories that involve our laity. Our stories need to be out of the box, innovative and unique. They should be laity engaged in expressing how they are living out generosity in all places.

We have had numerous stories on Congregations for Children, Stop Hunger Now, prayer shawls, Volunteers in Mission, Back Pack Buddies and food pantries. Each one of these are important ministries and we are thankful for them, but the Executive Committee requests that our stories not include these this year.

We are asking for short written summaries of unique ministries in our district. These should be innovative, unique, laity expressing how they are living out generosity in all places. The deadline for these stories is MARCH 24.

Please email these to me at ardavis@nccumc.org. The Board of Laity will choose one per district (and each district lay leader will be excluded from the choice for his/her district in order to be as fair as possible). All the stories not used at Annual Conference will be used at some point during the year.

I apologize for the short time for obtaining these stories, but I have just received the final okay on this.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email or phone…252 916 7516 (c) or 252 756 6371 – (h). Thanks so much for your response to this; we are excited about our presentation for Annual Conference.

In Christ,

Ann Davis
Sound District Lay Leader

Lenten Mission Focus – Community Crossroads Center

St. James has a long history with the Greenville Community Shelter. We were one of the early churches that worked together to start a local shelter for the homeless in Pitt County.  With that tradition and history in mind, the St. James Mission Committee has selected the Community Crossroads Center (formerly the Greenville Homeless Shelter) as our Lenten Missional Focus. The need is great for the center as last year alone they provided shelter and food for 560 different people. So let us do as Jesus asks and help feed the hungry and invite in the stranger.

You may bring donations at any time during the season of Lent with an indication that they are for the Lenten Focus or CCC (Community Crossroads Shelter).  Thank you St James!

Announcements

St. James Designated a Rainbow Covenant Church

St. James was designated a Rainbow Covenant Church for 2016.  This  title is given to churches that have given donations to at least one project in each lane of the United Methodist Advance Special Gifts.  Our giving through the Advance helps to sustain projects that feed, clothe, rescue, house, teach and share Jesus.  Thank You St. James for your continued generous spirit!

Easter Donations

On Easter Sunday our bulletins will contain a listing of special donations “in honor of” or “in memory of” loved ones of this congregation. This is a wonderful way to honor the saints that have gone before us as we look forward to the time that we will see them again on that great resurrection day! If you would like to have a loved one listed in the bulletin, please fill out the dedication form (available at the church office and online) and return it to the church office by Sunday, April 9th.

We will not be purchasing Lilies this year to decorate the Sanctuary. Instead, these donations will be used for the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund which assists those in need in our community.

Quarterly Contribution Statements moving to Email

Our goal is to be good stewards of God’s resources. One way we can do this is by emailing your quarterly contribution statements. You can help us by making sure we have an accurate email address for you. As of April, 2017 all quarterly contribution statements will be emailed. If you prefer to receive a paper statement mailed to you in lieu of an emailed statement, please contact Marianne Leventry at 252-752- 6154 or Marianne@stjconnect.org. For tax purposes, you will always get a paper copy of your year-end statement.

Participation is needed in a research study about sit-to-stand and balance. We are looking for men and women over the age of 65, able to stand unassisted several times, and able to participate in a strength-training program. The primary purpose of the study is to evaluate how lower-limb strength impacts sit-to-stand and balance in individuals over the age of 65.

Participation can include two visits of an hour and a halg each plus three 15-minute visits a week for eight weeks. This will total approximately 45 minutes per week, or 9 hours for completion of study.
If interested, please contact Jenna Pate at the ECU Department of Kinesiology at patej13@students.ecu.edu or 252-737-4616. Or contact Zachary Domire at domirez@ecu.edu.
