One Great Hour of Sharing – UMCOR Sunday

This Sunday, March 26, we invite you to join with thousands of others across the nation in a special offering to support the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). When we participate in One Great Hour of Sharing, we help cover the operating budget of UMCOR. Your support makes it possible for UMCOR to direct 100% of all other contributions to the projects our donors specify, instead of using this money on administrative or fundraising costs.

It is a powerful statement that your gifts enable UMCOR to respond in times of crisis. UMCOR is an incredible organization that we are honored to have in our family.

• When Katrina struck in 2005, UMCOR was there with heartfelt prayers, tears, monetary donations and volunteering spirits.
• After earthquakes struck Japan and Haiti, UMCOR was there.
• After forest fires displace hundreds of families, UMCOR is there.
• As millions of refugees and migrants seek out safety and opportunity, UMCOR is there.

All over the world, UMCOR is there, providing compassion and hope to those who desperately need it. And that only happens through the generosity and faithfulness of United Methodists like you!

There will be special offering envelopes available at the information booths this Sunday.  Or you can mark your gift by indicating UMCOR on the check or envelope.

UMW Sound District Mission Study

The Sound District UMW will hold a Mission Study at St. James UMC this Saturday, March 25th.  All women are invited.

Our guest speaker will be Steve Taylor and he will be presenting on “The Bible and Human Sexuality”.  Registration begins at 9:30 am.  The Study will begin at 10:00 am and continue until 2:00 pm with a break for lunch.  Bring your own sandwich.

College Scholarships for High School Seniors

There are a number of foundations that offer annual scholarships to graduating High School Seniors from the St. James community. The completed application, along with a current signed and sealed school transcript, must be returned to the Church Office by tomorrow, Friday, March 24th, at 5:00 pm.  The applications for College Scholarships are now available in the Church Office or download one here.

Update on Open Staff Positions

On behalf of the SPRC, I wanted to take a moment and update the congregation on our open positions.

Regarding the Youth Director position, we have been very fortunate to have several good candidates apply for this position. Telephone interviews have been completed and we are currently coordinating with our top 5 candidates to come in for face to face interviews. We expect to have all of the face to face interviews completed by the end of March and an offer made shortly after. We will make an announcement shortly after acceptance.

Regarding the Senior Pastor position, Rev. Linda Taylor, our district superintendent, has met with Johnny and the SPRC to understand the attributes that will be critical to the success of St. James and the new pastor. As you may know, the Senior Pastor is an appointed position made by Bishop Ward. This means that the SPRC will not interview candidates as we did with the Associate Pastor position. The Cabinet (which includes the Bishop and District Superintendents) will discuss the attributes we provided and will look at all the churches in the conference and will use prayer to allow the Holy Spirit to guide the discussion and ultimate placement of our Pastor. Once the final determination is made, the SPRC will be notified and we will announce at all of the church services the following Sunday. We expect this to be sometime in late April.

Hopefully, this update has provided some clarity and timing on our open positions. I would ask that you be in prayer for the SPRC, the Bishop and Cabinet, along with Johnny and Susan during this time of transition.

May God Bless.

Tim Barrett
SPRC Chair

Lenten Mission Focus – Community Crossroads Center

The St. James Mission Committee has selected the Community Crossroads Center (formerly the Greenville Homeless Shelter) as our Lenten Missional Focus. The need is great for the center as last year alone they provided shelter and food for 560 different people. So let us do as Jesus asks and help feed the hungry and invite in the stranger.

You may bring donations at any time during the season of Lent with an indication that they are for the Lenten Focus or CCC (Community Crossroads Shelter).  Thank you St James!

2017 Guatemala Mission Team

Now Forming

Have you considered an international mission trip?
We have a number of opportunities at St. James, and one of them is our mission to Guatemala. We began our relationship with the people in Guatemala in 2004 and it has been a wonderful one.

Shepherded by missionaries Jim and Dianne Thompson, we have developed a network of people who now help us help the people of Guatemala.

Our week-long trip allows us to provide medical care, eye care, activities for children and women, and experience God’s love along the way. We developed a service project at a local nursing home and have expanded our mission to involve a “stove project.”

Though the medical aspect of our mission trip is a big part of what we do, there are opportunities, especially with our service projects, to become involved in this project. We invite anyone, those with medical skills and those without, to come
join us for an informational meeting this Sunday, March 26th at 3 PM.

Please call Eric Everett (252-367-6511), if you have questions and want more information, especially if you are interested and cannot attend this meeting. Hasta pronto!

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Celebrates Ninth Anniversary

The St James UMC Prayer Shawl Mission is celebrating its Ninth Anniversary.  We have two groups meeting each Monday.  One at 10:30 am and one at 6:30 pm.

During the last nine years they have sent out 1142 prayer shawls to those who need comfort.  They also stitch newborn or preemie layettes for those newborns who do not survive birth.  In the last year, lap robes have been distributed to the Vidant Hospice and to University Nursing Home. Each item is prayed over when it is made.  Periodically all items are blessed during services by the Ministerial Staff.

Prayer Shawl Ministry meets in Room 21 behind Noah’s Ark.  Come join us if you knit or crochet and want to have plenty of fun and fellowship.  If you want to learn to knit or crochet, please join us.  We have wonderful teachers and more fun than you can imagine.  We are always anxious to welcome new members.

St. James Designated a Rainbow Covenant Church

St. James was designated a Rainbow Covenant Church for 2016.  This  title is given to churches that have given donations to at least one project in each lane of the United Methodist Advance Special Gifts.  Our giving through the Advance helps to sustain projects that feed, clothe, rescue, house, teach and share Jesus.  Thank You St. James for your continued generous spirit!

Easter Donations

On Easter Sunday our bulletins will contain a listing of special donations “in honor of” or “in memory of” loved ones of this congregation. This is a wonderful way to honor the saints that have gone before us as we look forward to the time that we will see them again on that great resurrection day! If you would like to have a loved one listed in the bulletin, please fill out the dedication form (available at the church office and online) and return it to the church office by Sunday, April 9th.

We will not be purchasing Lilies this year to decorate the Sanctuary. Instead, these donations will be used for the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund which assists those in need in our community.

Older Adults Needed for Research Study

Participation is needed in a research study about sit-to-stand and balance. We are looking for men and women over the age of 65, able to stand unassisted several times, and able to participate in a strength-training program. The primary purpose of the study is to evaluate how lower-limb strength impacts sit-to-stand and balance in individuals over the age of 65.

Participation can include two visits of an hour and a half each plus three 15-minute visits a week for eight weeks. This will total approximately 45 minutes per week, or 9 hours for completion of study.
If interested, please contact Jenna Pate at the ECU Department of Kinesiology at patej13@students.ecu.edu or 252-737-4616. Or contact Zachary Domire at domirez@ecu.edu.
