Summer Study Offerings

Summertime is more laid back and relaxed for most of us, so what a great opportunity to spend time with God. Sign up for one of these study options today at stjconnect.org or by calling the church office at 752-6154. Childcare may be available if requested two weeks ahead of time and if there is more than one family needing it.

Contemplating Prayers
Too often we rush through our prayers like they are no more than a laundry list for God. We tell God what we want God to do and then get about the business of our day. What if we took time to pray the well-known prayers of our best spiritual teachers slowly, allowing our souls to digest their wisdom and allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to us through them? This group will take the prayers of Jesus, St. Francis of Assisi, John Wesley, and others, and let them become the door to a deeper communion with God. We will meet Monday evenings, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Contact Joyce Day for more information.

The Book of Jonah
Mark Woods will be offering a 5-week class on the fascinating book of Jonah. Find out why Jonah tries to ignore God and winds up with the biggest fish story ever told! Wednesdays, 6:30-7:30 p.m. The class will begin on June 21 and finish up on July 19.

Letters of Love and Unity
Join Marianne Leventry in digging deeper into Paul’s letters to the Ephesians and Philippians through lectio divina. This summer we will read slowly through these two letters of love and unity and discover more of what it means to be the church of Jesus Christ. This 11-week study will start on Wednesday, June 14. Time: 12:00-1:00 p.m. If you want more information about this class call Marianne at the church office.

Wednesday Women
What is that security, that hurt, that desire, that prayer you’ve brought to God countless times? Join us for Wednesday Women’s summer study, Finding I Am, by Lisa TerKeurst, and see what Jesus says to us and how He wants to satisfy our hearts. During this study, we are going to delve into the seven ‘I AM’ statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John. Come explore the Word of God and discover Jesus anew, who is the great ‘I AM.’ We will meet in the Retreat House, Wednesday evenings 6:15 – 7:45; June 7, 14, 28, July 5, 12, 26.

We will honor our Graduating High School Seniors and their families with a Senior Breakfast on Sunday, June 4 @ 9:45 am in the Fellowship Hall. Graduating seniors will be presented at both the 9:00 am and 11:00 am worship services that day and are asked to wear their graduation regalia. There will be a group photo of the St. James High School Class of 2017 that morning. This breakfast is for the graduating seniors and their families. PLEASE RSVP to the church office or to Elizabeth Westbrook @ (252) 531-8667 by Monday, May 22 with the number of your family members attending the breakfast.

We are collecting photos of your high school senior to be used as centerpieces. Please provide us with six photographs ranging from birth through their senior year. These pictures should be labeled with your child’s name and left in the church office in an envelope labeled Higher Education. The pictures will be returned to you in the condition they were received.

Parents of High School JUNIORS are asked to assist with decorating the tables, preparing the food, serving, and cleaning up after the breakfast. Please contact Elizabeth Westbrook @ (252) 531-8667 to confirm your willingness to participate.

You Are Invited!

Saturday, June 24th at 5:00 pm
Cook-out and reception to honor

Johnny and Susan Branch

for their years of ministry with St. James and to wish them well in retirement.

There will be hot dogs and hamburgers and all the fixin’s.  The cook-out is free, but we ask that you RSVP and let us know how many to cook for!  Please call Dana at the church office (252-752-6154 or Dana@stjconnect.org) or click below to make a reservation.

It will be a fun and celebratory evening (and it won’t just be the hot dogs that will be roasted!) If you would like to be part of a thank you video for Johnny and Susan or if you would like to share a story about your experiences with the Branch family, please contact Alan Gill at the church (252-752-6154 or Alan@stjconnect.org) to arrange a time to record it. Or record it and email it to him.

All are invited!

Dear Church Family,

As we celebrate with Johnny his 42 years of active ministry and approaching retirement, I would like to ask you to prayerfully consider making a love offering so that we can provide Johnny with a small token of appreciation for all he has done for St. James and God’s kingdom through the years. If you feel led, please designate this as “Johnny Love Offering” on the memo line of your check and place in the offering plate, or drop it by the church office by the end of May. Thank you for your consideration.

May God Bless.

Tim Barrett, SPRC Chair

Worship Survey

Help the Worship Committee better understand the worship life of St. James! There are Worship Surveys available in the Commons and the Narthex. Please take a few moments to answer the 14 questions and place the completed survey in the collection boxes by Sunday, June 11th. Or complete one online by clicking here.  We invite EVERY PERSON in your household 12 yrs or older who attends worship to fill out a copy of the survey. Please only one per person.

Worship is such a vital part of the church. We want to hear from you so that together we can make it engaging and relevant to our congregation and our guests.

Thank you for your help!

Small Group Opportunity

Our schedules seem to be getting more and more hectic. Even so, many of us want to stay on track with our spiritual journeys and keep our relationship with God strong and growing. How do we do that along with everything else that fills our calendars?

St. James is developing neighborhood small groups to help fill this need, and we are now looking for folks willing to host such a group in your home for at least the first two months as these new groups get launched. Click here to read more.

Or if you are interested in helping us launch a small group in your neighborhood, please contact Joyce Day at 252-752-6154 or joyce@stjconnect.org.

UMW! The summer is here and there are many great books in the Parlor for the Reading Program. Please go by and get a program sheet, choose one that you can complete by August, relax and READ! You do not need to be a UMW member to participate, we would love to have you join us. Please give your completed sheet to Lynn Gammell.
