This Week at

“Follow Jesus … Love Others … Change the World”

Can you believe that summer is almost over?

Students have already begun to return to town, children are preparing for their new classes or new schools, and we all are beginning to think about our fall routines.

A way that we can come together as ONE is in our Christian formation. The myriad options shared in this year’s program guide are really different expressions of one thing: Connection. At St. James, our hope is that every member can make time to connect with Christ and connect with brothers and sisters in Christ.

The Fall Program Guide will be arriving in St. James members’ mailboxes soon. We are excited about the range of classes and groups offered this fall for all ages and hope that you will find a place to connect and grow with us.

You can register for the Fall Classes through the church website (www.stjconnect.org/Fall-Classes-2017) beginning August 20th,  or by calling the Church Office (752-6154).

You can pick up a Fall Program Guide at the church,

or download a PDF copy by clicking here.

We wanted to share with you two updates on our recent staffing transitions:

Susan Cahoon, our Receptionist & Weekday Ministries Bookkeeper, will serve as the interim Preschool Director. Susan worked previously as a Preschool Teacher and is familiar with the program. She will ably fill the gap as the Weekday Ministries Board considers more permanent staffing options.

Tim Messina, who previously served as the Technology Coordinator for the ConneXion Services and as a Choral Scholar, will serve as the interim ConneXion Worship Leader. This will allow time for consideration of the long-term needs and vision for these worship services in making a permanent staffing decision.

We are grateful for Susan and Tim for their willingness to step into the gap and ensure that we maintain the wonderful ministries in both of these arenas.

Yours in Christ,

Tim Barrett (SPRC Chair)
Jennifer Haddock (Weekday Ministries Chair)
Ben Alexander (Senior Pastor)

Thank you!

Thank you!

Thank you!

Thanks to your generous monetary contributions and the donated school kits, the needs of the students and teachers at Wahl-Coates will be met!

Now we need your help delivering the packets to the school!

This Sunday, August 20th, following the 11:00 & 11:11 services, we are taking 315 school kits and 37 Teacher Supply boxes down the street to Wahl-Coates school. Drive your pick-up or family van to church that morning and help deliver the kits to the school. Or, be part of the loading or un-loading teams.

What a blessing these school supplies will be for the children and teachers at Wahl-Coates school!

For more information, contact Molly Carpenter (752-6154 or Molly@stjconnect.org).

We are so excited for the Greenville North State Little League team (and our very own Thomas Barrett) who will be playing in the Little League World Series!
We will have the game on the big screens at the church this Friday,
August 18th, at 8:00 pm.  Help us root on the home team!
Popcorn and drinks will be provided.
Good luck, Thomas!
We’ll be cheering for you!

“just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ”

(1 Corinthians 12:12)

St. James may be a large church, but we are always ONE!

Celebrate together, renew friendships, and discover new friends and opportunities at the St. James fall kick-off event.

Wednesday, August 30, 5:30-7:30 pm

There will be a covered dish meal at 5:30 pm.  Chicken and drinks will be supplied by the church.  Bring a dish to share!

There will be music from many of our talented musical groups, testimonies, and games and fun for the children!

Let us know how many to expect for dinner!

We are … better together!

Sunday mornings offer a wonderful opportunity for folks of all ages to spend time in Bible study and discussion through our Living Water classes. Our adult classes offer a wide range of topics from books of the Bible to how to live out your Christian faith each day. Two of our groups are starting new studies.

Life Enrichment, which meets in Room 310, will be studying God Unbound, a book about Paul’s letter to the Galatians, written by Elaine Heath from Duke University. She shows us how Paul’s teachings can help us today to boldly follow the Holy Spirit’s leadership beyond buildings and programs to join what Jesus is doing in the world.

The Seekers meet in Room 311 and are starting Max Lucado’s book, Outlive Your Live. God has a purpose for us all and that purpose is to fulfill God’s mission of active love in the world. Our lives are meant to reflect the redeeming power of God’s love as we feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and visit the lonely. If you are looking for a way to bring more meaning to your life, you won’t want to miss this study.

The Women On the Way (WOW) group invites the ladies of St. James to join them for their fall book study, “A Perfect Mess” by Lisa Harper. Through this liberating look at how God adores and transforms imperfect people, Bible teacher Lisa Harper weaves poignant stories of her own personal foibles with a fresh take on selected Psalms to reveal a loving Father who remains your greatest champion even when you don’t feel anywhere close to holy.  Come join us! Sundays at 10:00 am. Room 306.

The Story Living Water Sunday school class will begin a new study on August 13. We will be reading and discussing Adam Hamilton’s book, Half-Truths.  Together we will explore popular sayings that miss the Christian point. These phrases may sound Christian and you may think they are even in the Bible, but they actually distort the truth about Jesus’ teachings and other aspects of Scripture. Join us in Room 21 at 9:55 a.m. on Sunday mornings to discover the difference between our half-truths and Jesus’ Truth.

And introducing a new class for young adults!

Beginning Sunday, September 10, we will be starting a new Living Water class for adults ages 18-27 (or thereabouts!). This class will meet in Room 307, 9:50-10:45 a.m., and will be led by Taylor and Dustin Dougherty. We plan to begin with a social gathering on 9/10 where we can discuss ideas and hopes for the future of the group.
For more information, contact Taylor Dougherty at Taylor@stjconnect.org.

Volunteer with Vidant Home Health and Hospice

Vidant Home Health and Hospice is currently recruiting volunteers in the Pitt County area. We have an increasing need for compassionate individuals whom are willing to provide support to patients and their families at the end of life. As a volunteer, you will be able to give back to the community, in an emotionally rewarding way.

Opportunities include:

  • Direct Support: Offering Companionship: Friendly visits to provide some special attention, a listening ear, and a comforting presence.
  • Respite Care: Respite care is an opportunity for the caregiver to have a break and still be assured their loved one is safe.
  • Indirect Support: Providing support in our offices or at the Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice.

Training is provided. To schedule a presentation about our volunteer program or to sign up as a Vidant Home Health and Hospice Volunteer please contact Angelina Brittle at 252-847-1236 or email Angelina.brittle@vidanthealth.com.
