Dear Friends,

Worship is at the heart of the life of a church.  Our missions, our spiritual formation, our evangelism all flow from how we are formed in worship to praise God and to offer the whole of our lives to our Lord Jesus Christ.  At St. James, we take seriously our call to excellence in all aspects of worship.

So we want to thank you for your participation in our worship survey this past June.  The purpose of this survey was to take a pulse of the congregation – give members an opportunity to communicate about the worship – so church leaders could get a sense of what possibly should be tweaked in order to improve our excellence in worship.  The purpose of the survey was NOT to make wholesale changes and the timing of the survey at the time of great staff turnover was a coincidence.

Sincerely,
The Worship Committee

Keep God’s Children Warm

We are in need of someone to lead the “Keep God’s Children Warm” mission project.  It is an important way we can serve our community by sharing coats, hats, gloves, and warm clothes with our Food Pantry patrons during the winter months.

If God is leading you to a new way to serve and you are interested in more information, please contact Karen Arny at nerakarny@aol.com or 252 258-5499.

The new school year has begun and we are aware of some volunteer needs at Wahl-Coates Elementary. The C4C (Congregations for Children) Committee have opportunities to serve in a classroom or in the school office. If you might be interested or would like more information, contact Lora Joyner (531-7481 or lora.joyner@suddenlink.net ) or Sandra Harvey (341-0782 or harveysw@gmail.com).

Be a Role Model!
Would you be willing to share your story and /or what good character traits have been important in your career with some of the students? The Wahl-Coates Captain’s Crew Luncheons for Positive Behavior meets one Friday a month and would like to invite a guest speaker each month. Are you a Doctor, Law Enforcement, Minister, Nurse, Musician, or other professional? We would enjoy having you share for 10-15 minutes with the students. The luncheons will be held at St. James from 12-1. Contact Lora Joyner for available dates (531-7481 or lora.joyner@suddenlink.net).

Hurricane Harvey

(and now IRMA!):

How Can We Help?

As we watch news coverage of the devastating flooding that Hurricane Harvey and Irma continues to produce, we want to help.  UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) outlines specific ways that you can help now, even as rescue efforts remain underway. Here are 5 things we can do.

Currently, the best way to donate is through UMCOR’s US Disaster Response Advance #901670.  You may give online to the fund or you may donate offline with a check.  If you donate with a check, you can make it out to St. James UMC, but please designate UMCOR Advance #901670 in the memo line.

The Emergency Rescue operations are complete and there is now a need for ERTs (Early Response Teams) in the Texas/Louisiana area.

  • The Louisiana Conference is now scheduling trained and badged Early Response Teams (ERT) for Hurricane Harvey response. All ERTs should click here to register.
  • The Texas Annual Conference is also ready to receive volunteer teams to assist with Hurricane Harvey response.Team leaders can register their team by clicking here or go to the Texas Conference website at txcumc.org and click on “Disaster Volunteer Team Registration.”
  • The Rio Texas Conference is also registering trained and badged ERT teams and individuals at riotexas.org/harvey-ert

When the Texas Annual Conference invites volunteers to come, we will publicize that information.  In the meanwhile, please pray for those impacted by the storm and for the many workers and volunteers who are offering rescue and care to those in need.

The annual St. James Charge Conference will be held on Thursday, September 28th at 7 pm in the Sanctuary.  This is the annual business meeting of the church with the District Superintendent.  It is a cluster meeting with 9 other United Methodists congregations represented.  Come hear all the great things God is doing at St. James UMC and around our District!

There is still time to sign up for a Fall Class!  Most classes have begun, but thw.

You can register for the Fall Classes here

or by calling the Church Office (752-6154).

You can pick up a Fall Program Guide at the church, or download a PDF copy by clicking here.

UMW Days for Girls Mission Project

The St. James United Methodist Women will be holding workshops on September 23rd & October 7th and 21st from 9am to noon in Room 21 to sew and prepare kits for our Days for Girls Project. The kits will be distributed by the St. James Mission Team in October. We are hopeful to prepare 50 kits for distribution. We need volunteers to sew, cut and assemble the items required for each kit.

We also are requesting donations of washcloths, small bars of soap, gallon ziplock bags and girls size underwear. The collection area for donations is located at the UMW Bulletin Board in the main hallway.

Days for Girls is an international project that gives girls an opportunity to stay in school by providing feminine hygiene supplies. If you would like to volunteer or have questions please contact Tammy Stephenson at stephensont@ecu.edu or Lynn Gammell gammelll@ecu.edu

Security Codes for Entry to Church Building

On Sunday morning and Wednesday evening, the doors of the church are unlocked and everyone is free to come and go as needed. During the church office hours (M-F, 8:00am – 5:00 pm), there will be a receptionist at the main door by the commons area who will open the door for you. All other times, a personal security code is required for entry.

Don Harvey, our facilities manager, will be happy to assign a 5-digit security code for you to enter the building between the hours of 8:00 am and 9:00 pm. You can contact him at the church at 752-6154 or Don@stjconnect.org. We want the church building to be accessible for us all, but we also want it to be a safe place. Please protect your security code by not sharing it with others. Encourage others to receive their own code from Don.

Be Smart and Safe this Fall

Greenville police are asking residents to help them stop crime by simply remembering to lock their car doors. Authorities say since the start of the school year, the number of car break-ins have increased.
Please do your part by not leaving valuables in your car and making sure your car is locked while in the church parking lot. Be smart and safe this fall!
