Year-end is a perfect time to pause and reflect on our many blessings. While we are remembering our family and friends and blessing them with gifts, it’s also a good time to remember our church.

Financial Giving in 2017 is coming to a close. In order to receive credit for your contributions, all transactions must be received in the church office or be postmarked by Saturday, Dec. 31, 2017. According to IRS regulations, anything received on Jan. 1, 2018 or later will be credited to your 2018 giving record. If you would like your giving to be automatically drafted from your checking account, please contact Marianne at 252-752-6154 or Marianne@stjconnect.org for more information.

Thank you St. James for being such a generous, caring, and spirit-led community!

Ringing the Bells with the Salvation Army

St. James UMC has established a Christmas tradition to serve the Greenville community by ringing the Salvation Army bells on one day during the Christmas holidays. This tradition was initiated by the late Les Garner and coordinated for over 20 years by Mike Board. In 2016, we collected $8,462. Last year, the total was $10,678. These funds allow the Salvation Army to meet the needs of many people who are less fortunate in our community and saves them from having to pay employees to ring the bells on that day.

With your help, we will be ringing the bells at 20 kettle sites throughout Greenville on Friday, December 22. We plan to have volunteers ring for 2-hour periods at each site beginning at 10:00 am and ending at 8:00 pm.

This serving ministry is one that many have enjoyed! It not only provides a valuable service to our community, but adds a special reminder of us all to the true meaning of Christmas – the birth of Jesus.

We are now signing up volunteers to serve! If you can help, please contact Tom Pauling at 252-752-5129 or 252-375-2267 or tpauling@suddenlink.net.

Get the year started out right! – Join a class on Wednesday nights!  Listings of available classes are now at the Information Booths or by clicking here.  Register online or through the church office (252-752-6154) and then join us for the fellowship dinner and classes at TGIW (Thank God It’s Wednesday) beginning January 17th!

Announcements

Church Office Hours during Holidays

The church office will be closed on Friday, December 22nd and Monday, December 25th for the Christmas Holiday. It will also be closed on Monday, January 1st.

Please be aware that many of your church staff have saved vacation days in order to spend the holidays with their families. The church office will be open during the week between Christmas and New Year’s, but it will be managed with a much smaller staff. Not all telephone calls or emails may be answered immediately, but we will respond as soon as we can.

If you have a questions regarding end-of year donations, you may contact Marianne Leventry, Financial Administrator, directly at 252-752-6154, ext 205, or Marianne@stjconnect.org. If you have a need to talk with a Pastor, please contact Rev. Mark Woods directly at 252-752-6154, ext 203, or Mark@stjconnect.org. If it is not an emergency, you can leave a message on the main phone line or send an email to info@stjconnect.org and we will get back with you in the new year.

Expanding the 11:00 am Usher Team

Psalms 84-10 says: “For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand outside. I’d rather be a door-keeper in the house of God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.”
Our Ushers represent St. James in a very visible way as door-keepers, greeting the wearying of the world into the sanctuary.  Many times an Usher is the first person a guest encounters at St. James. Would you be interested in serving our church in this important ministry?
We are looking to expand our corp of Ushers for the 11:00 am service in the Sanctuary. If you are interested, or would like more information, please contact Bill Cox at 252-531-3466.

Old Board Games Needed for Wahl-Coates School

As we look to purchase gifts and new toys for our children, consider donating your old games for use by Wahl-Coates students. The Music Teacher, Dawn Wilson, is in need of used games that she will modify for musical activities. Games needed are: Jenga (or similar), Candyland, Headbanz, Dominoes, Yahtzee, Twister, and Sorry. These games do not need to be in new condition or have all the pieces. She is also in need of timers (sand or others), spinners, and blank dice. If you have any of these items to donate, please place them in the bins near the Children’s Check-in area.

Remember to turn in your box tops for credit to Wahl Coates. Also, you can list Wahl Coates as a preferred school with your VIC Card at Harris Teeter.

Lastly, Wahl Coates is collecting plastic bottle tops. Bring yours to the church for collection near the Children’s Check-In area.

We are grateful for your encouraging response to the recent letter about our finances, including a few generous one-time gifts towards our Building Disciples Loan.  Thank you for your continued efforts to help us finish 2017 strong and for your generosity!

Family Worship During Advent

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14)
During Advent, we are encouraging families to worship together. So from December 3rd – 31st, we will not offer Children’s Chapel or Childcare for school-age children during the worship services. Instead, we are excited to have them join us for worship in the Sanctuary or the Christian Life Ministries Center where all services will include a children’s message. Nursery is still provided for infants-4 year olds, and we will have Sunday School classes as usual for all ages.

Taking Steps Toward Hope

Grief involves many emotions and can resemble the movement of the ocean, coming and going like the tide. It’s common to have waves of anger, guilt, numbness, sadness or relief. All of these are normal reactions when someone you love dies, be it from a long illness or sudden tragedy. Experiencing grief and bereavement is a journey. Everyone’s experience is different and unique. You may feel alone and need someone to share your thoughts and feelings.

Living on After Loss provides an outlet for those who are experiencing grief. Living on After Loss is a structured, small group that meets once a week for an 8 week series. Here you will find a safe place to learn, understand, and cope with a loss. The first 2 sessions will focus on basic information about the grieving process, reactions to loss, and coping strategies. The next 6 sessions will provide support that will help you identify the feelings and
physical effects of loss, provide awareness of the grieving process, help in redefining yourself, and promote awareness of your potential support systems. Seats are limited and preregistration is required.

TIME:
Tuesdays, January 9 – February 27, 2018
6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
Tuesdays, April 10 – May 29, 2018
12:00pm to 1:30pm

LOCATION:
East Carolina University Family Therapy Clinic
612 East 10th St, Greenville, NC 27834

Pathways to Hope is an ongoing, monthly support group where different topics will be discussed each month. You are welcome to come and go based on your needs with no start date or end date.

TIME:
The second Tuesday of every month
5:30pm to 7:00 pm

LOCATION:
Vidant Wellness Center
2610 Stantonsburg Road, Greenville, NC 27834

Living on After Loss and Pathways to Hope are provided as a community service by Vidant Home Health and Hospice. These programs are free for individuals in our community who have experienced the death of an important person in their lives.
For further information, call (252) 847-1236.

Volunteer with Vidant Home Health and Hospice

Vidant Home Health and Hospice is currently recruiting volunteers in the Pitt County area. We have an increasing need for compassionate individuals whom are willing to provide support to patients and their families at the end of life. As a volunteer, you will be able to give back to the community, in an emotionally rewarding way.

Opportunities include:

  • Direct Support: Offering Companionship: Friendly visits to provide some special attention, a listening ear, and a comforting presence.
  • Respite Care: Respite care is an opportunity for the caregiver to have a break and still be assured their loved one is safe.
  • Indirect Support: Providing support in our offices or at the Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice.

Training is provided. To schedule a presentation about our volunteer program or to sign up as a Vidant Home Health and Hospice Volunteer please contact Angelina Brittle at 252-847-1236 or email Angelina.brittle@vidanthealth.com.
