Lenten Events at St. James

2019 Lenten Worship Series

The Season of Lent in the church challenges us to grow in faith as we prepare for the passion, death, and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus.  Stretching over forty days (not counting Sundays) and culminating in Holy Week & Easter, the Lenten season provides a variety of ways to remember that we are God’s children, created to love and serve God and one another.  This year at St. James, we want to encourage your participation several different ways.

Word

The pastoral team is encouraging the entire congregation to read the Gospel of Luke through the Lenten Season. To help you read Luke thoughtfully and prayerfully in manageable sections, we have organized and written the Lent Devotional so that you can read a devotion a day that focuses upon passages from Luke, in order. Therefore, the devotion for Ash Wednesday is a reflection on Luke 1, the devotion for Thursday, March 7, will reflect on Luke 2, and so on, ending on Easter Sunday with a devotion centered on Luke 24:13-53, the last portion of the Gospel. The Devotional Guide will be ready by March 3, the Sunday before Ash Wednesday.
Pick up your copy of the Lenten Devotional Guide at the church, or sign up below to receive the daily devotions emailed to you each morning.

Worship

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6. We will observe the start of the Lenten Season with an Ash Wednesday service at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. On the Sundays of Lent, the pastors will focus their preaching upon specific passages from Luke in coordination with the Lenten Devotional.  So, for example, you will read a devotion on Saturday, March 16, about Jesus naming His disciples, which the pastors will focus upon in the sermons on March 17.   Lent will culminate in Holy Week with services at 6:30 pm on Maundy Thursday (4/18)  and Good Friday (4/19).  Easter Sunday is April 21 and will feature a sunrise service in addition to regularly scheduled services that morning.

Service

The focus of Lenten giving will support the JOY Soup Kitchen. St. James enjoys many connections to the soup kitchen, including its very name! Nancy Singleton suggested the name when the kitchen began as Jesus Others & You – JOY – Soup Kitchen. Several UMW Circles donate and serve soup and sandwiches every month. Ruth Ann and Gus Keyes, Judy Murad, and Cheryl Duncan are among the members of St. James who deliver and serve soup. We will strengthen that connection to the JOY Soup Kitchen by the gifts of our donations.

May the Holy Spirit guide you to journey with Jesus at St. James
through this holy Season of Lent!

Holy Week – Worship Opportunities

The week leading up to Easter, is a time of great emotional turmoil as we commemorate the Passion of Christ, Who died on Good Friday and rose on Easter Sunday to give new life to all who believe.  While Holy Week is solemn and sorrowful, it also anticipates the joy of Easter through the recognition of God’s goodness in sending His Son to die for our salvation.  At St. James, we encourage you to experience the Passion of Christ by participating in the Holy Week services.

Maundy Thursday Service

-April 18th at 6:30 pm in the Sanctuary
A thought-provoking service exploring the events on the Thursday evening before Jesus was arrested.  The service will include a discussion of the Passover meal, an optional foot washing, and a sharing of Holy Communion.

Good Friday Service

A solemn Tenebrae service where we remember the suffering and death of Christ on the cross.

Easter Sunrise Service – April 21st at 6:30 am on the Sanctuary Lawn

Remembering how the women rose before the sun to attend to Jesus’ body in the tomb, we celebrate that the tomb was empty and Jesus was alive!  He is risen!

Easter Communion – April 21st at 6:50 am (or as soon as the Sunrise service ends)
A breaking of the Lenten fast with an Eucharist celebration.  The weeping and sorrow is over, there is new hope in the risen Lord.  With the body and the blood of Jesus, what is in our past is washed away and we become Easter people, made new in His mercy!

Fellowship Breakfast – April 21st at 7:00 am (or as soon as the Communion service ends)
A chance to Fellowship as the body of Christ with a full breakfast provided by the United Methodist Men.  All are invited.
