Pentecost In the Park

Well, maybe not “in the park” this year!

UPDATE — UPDATE — UPDATE
Due to the inclement weather forecast for this weekend, we are moving our ONE church Pentecost Celebration indoors.  So, we will meet for worship as ONE church at 10:30 am this Sunday, May 20th, in the largest room we can get our hands on – the Christian Life Ministries Center.  It will be a great gathering with music by our Chancel Choir, the Children’s Choir, and the ConneXion Praise Team.  We will celebrate Confirmation with our youth, and share Communion together.  It will be Pentecost in the Park (just not in the park).

Things you need to know:
  • Come early to get a good seat!  Service will start promptly at 10:30 am.  We are working to set up some overflow rooms, but we hope we can all be together.
  • Food service will be as advertised.  Box lunches will be distributed in the Commons area following the service, and the Smashed Waffle food truck will be parked under the overhang outside the CLMC.  Feel free to move the chairs in the CLMC, gather round tables in the Fellowship Hall, or hang out in any classroom as we enjoy our indoor picnic!  You can still purchase a box lunch below through Wednesday!
  • The Smashed Waffles have been donated by a very generous church member!  They are cooking 400 free waffles just for us!  First come, first served.
  • Attire is still casual!  Wear your picnic clothes.  We do encourage everyone to wear “fire” colors to celebrate Pentecost (red, orange, or yellow).
  • You don’t have to bring your own chair.  We’ll have as many chairs set up as we can safely put in the CLMC.

Shortly after Jesus ascended into heaven, the disciples received the gift of the Holy Spirit upon them at the festival of Pentecost. The disciples began to speak in many different languages, a symbol of how the Spirit draws together the body of Christ as one despite our differences. Christians today celebrate Pentecost as the birth of the church.

This year for Pentecost, we’re going to celebrate the unity of St. James UMC through one special worship service. We’ll gather on Sunday, May 20 at 10:30 at Town Common Park (105 East First Street), just north of uptown and right on the Tar River!  We’ll draw together elements of all four of our normal worship services and celebrate the presence of the Holy Spirit today!

A few important notes for your information:
  • Please bring your own blankets and/or chairs for worship!  We will have some chairs for those of us with limited mobility, but we hope to gather much like the summertime’s Sunday in the Park.
  • While there should be plenty of parking nearby, we will run shuttles from St. James to the park for your convenience.
  • We will provide some shaded seating and assistance for those with mobility issues
  • After the service, we hope you will stay for a picnic lunch at the park (you can bring your own or order a boxed lunch for just $8 – see below)
We have been drawn together as Christ’s body. Please mark May 20th on your calendars and plan to join in this service as we come together to celebrate our church!  There will not be any services at the St. James campus that morning.

PS…Please start praying for beautiful weather that day!

Plan to stay for lunch!
You can bring your own picnic lunch, or order a box lunch that will be delivered to the park at the conclusion of our worship service (around 12:00 pm)!  The missions committee will be providing free bottles of water through out the day.

The box lunches will be pre-ordered from Honey Baked Ham.  For $8.00 per box, you will receive a hearty sandwich, chips, and a large cookie.  Click the button below to order and pay for your box lunch today!  OR contact the church office (252.752.6154) to arrange an alternate payment.
